What the XML Sitemap Validator checks
Validate a sitemap or sitemap index against the sitemaps.org protocol and Google's limits: well-formed XML, namespace, size, entry count, URL scope, and lastmod.
- Well-formed XML and the sitemaps.org namespace
- File size and entry count against Google's limits
- URLs outside the sitemap's scope
- Missing or invalid lastmod dates
What it does not do
- Fetching child sitemaps from an index
- Discovering sitemaps from robots.txt
- Confirming Google ingested the file
- Validating image, video, or news extension tags
Questions about the XML Sitemap Validator
- How many URLs can one sitemap list?
- Up to 50,000 URLs, in a file no larger than 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites split their URLs across several sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index.
- Does Google use priority and changefreq?
- No, Google ignores both. It uses lastmod when the dates are consistently accurate, so change lastmod only when the page content changes.
- Does it check every sitemap in an index?
- No, it validates the file you give it, so run it on each child sitemap. It also cannot confirm that Google has read the file; Search Console's Sitemaps report does that.
- How much does the XML Sitemap Validator cost?
- 10 credits per run, shown before the run starts. An AI agent can run the same tool over the REST API or MCP with a workspace API key.
