What the Indexing & Canonical Checker checks
Check whether a URL can be crawled, indexed and quoted: status, robots.txt, meta robots, X-Robots-Tag, the canonical and its target, and snippet controls for Google and Bing.
- The page's HTTP status
- robots.txt rules for Google and Bing crawlers
- Meta robots and X-Robots-Tag directives, such as noindex
- The canonical tag and whether its target is indexable
- Snippet controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet
What it does not do
- Search Console confirmation that the URL is in Google’s index
- JavaScript rendering or meta-refresh crawling
- Full robots.txt audits or sitemap coverage
Questions about the Indexing & Canonical Checker
- Why is my page not indexed by Google?
- The usual causes are a noindex in the meta robots tag or X-Robots-Tag header, a canonical that points to another URL, an error status, or a robots.txt rule that stops crawling. This checker reads each signal and names the one that blocks the page. It cannot confirm whether Google has indexed the URL; Search Console's URL Inspection does that.
- Does blocking a page in robots.txt remove it from Google?
- No. robots.txt stops crawling, not indexing. A blocked URL can still appear in results when other pages link to it, and Google cannot see a noindex on a page it may not fetch. To keep a page out of the index, allow crawling and add noindex.
- Is the canonical tag a directive?
- No, Google treats rel=canonical as a strong hint. It can pick a different canonical when redirects, internal links or sitemap entries point elsewhere. The checker loads the canonical target so you can see when it conflicts.
- How much does the Indexing & Canonical Checker cost?
- 8 credits per run, shown before the run starts. An AI agent can run the same tool over the REST API or MCP with a workspace API key.
