What the Hreflang Checker checks
Validate a page’s hreflang codes, self-reference and x-default, then fetch each language version to confirm it loads, is indexable and links back.
- Language and region codes
- Self-reference and x-default
- Whether each language version loads and is indexable
- Return links from each language version
- noindex and canonical conflicts
What it does not do
- hreflang in XML sitemaps
- Crawling every page of the site
- Choosing which markets to target
Questions about the Hreflang Checker
- What is a hreflang return link?
- When page A lists page B as an alternate, page B must list page A back. Google ignores pairs that do not link to each other, the most common hreflang error.
- Which codes does hreflang use?
- An ISO 639-1 language code, optionally followed by an ISO 3166-1 region code, such as en, en-GB or es-MX. x-default marks the page for visitors whose language matches none of the others.
- Does it check hreflang in XML sitemaps?
- No. It reads the hreflang annotations on the page, then fetches each language version they list.
- How much does the Hreflang Checker cost?
- 10 credits per run, shown before the run starts. An AI agent can run the same tool over the REST API or MCP with a workspace API key.
