Semrush alternatives: what to use for each job
·7 min read
The best Semrush alternative depends on which part of Semrush you pay for. If you want one suite for less money, SE Ranking is the closest swap. If you use only one module, buy the tool built for that job, such as Google Keyword Planner for keyword volumes, Similarweb for traffic estimates, Ahrefs for backlinks or Google's Ads Transparency Center for competitor ads. Teams that work in most Semrush modules every day should usually stay.
Before you look for a cheaper alternative to Semrush, list the reports you actually opened last month. That list decides what you should buy, not the feature grid. Every price below comes from the vendor's own pricing page as of October 2026 and is the monthly price unless it says annual billing.
What Semrush costs and does well in 2026
Semrush pricing starts at $139 a month for the SEO plan, or $117.33 a month billed annually, as of October 2026. That plan covers 5 websites, 500 keywords tracked daily, basic keyword research and competitor analysis, Position Tracking, Site Audit and AI search tracking.
Starter, at $199 a month, swaps the basic research for Semrush's keyword research and competitor insights tools and adds MCP access for AI assistants. Pro+ costs $299 with 15 websites, 1,500 tracked keywords and historical data. Advanced costs $549 with 40 websites, 5,000 keywords and API access. Extra users start at $45 a month each.
Traffic estimates and ad research are sold as separate toolkits. Traffic & Market Pro is $289 a month billed annually, and the Advertising toolkit starts at $99 a month billed annually. Semrush also has a no-cost account with one demo project and 10 reports a day, and a seven-day trial.
What Semrush does well is breadth. Keyword research, competitor analysis, backlink analysis, audits, rank tracking, ads and AI visibility sit behind one login. If you use that breadth, the price is fair. If you use one corner of it, you are paying for the rest.
The best Semrush alternative for each job
The table shows the tool we would compare first for each job and the cheapest way to get similar data.
| Job | Alternative to compare first | Price as of October 2026 | No-cost option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyword research | Ubersuggest or Moz Pro | Ubersuggest US$29 to US$99 a month, Moz Pro from $99 a month | Google Keyword Planner |
| Competitor traffic | Similarweb Competitive Intelligence | $199 a month, or $125 billed annually | Semrush's no-cost account, 10 reports a day |
| Competitor keywords | SE Ranking Core | $129 a month | Semrush's no-cost account, 10 reports a day |
| Backlinks | Ahrefs Lite | $129 a month | Ahrefs' no-cost plan for website owners |
| Site audits | SE Ranking Core or Moz Pro | $129 or $99 a month | Ahrefs' no-cost plan for website owners |
| Rank tracking | SE Ranking Core | $129 a month, 2,000 keywords daily | Search Console, your own site only |
| Competitor ads | Google Ads Transparency Center | No cost | Same tool |
SE Ranking shows up in three rows, which makes it the pick if you want one suite and one bill. Google's own tools cover keyword volumes, your own rankings and competitor ads at no cost. None of them shows the organic keywords a competitor ranks for, and that is the data you end up paying for.
A cheaper alternative to Semrush for keyword research
For keyword research alone, start with Google Keyword Planner, because it costs nothing. Google describes it as a resource for advertisers to build keyword lists, and it shows how often terms are searched, how that changes over time, and bid estimates and forecasts. To open it you need a Google Ads account, and Google asks you to finish the account setup with a campaign first. Its numbers answer ad questions. For organic difficulty and the pages that rank, you need a paid tool.
Ubersuggest is the budget pick. Its plans run from US$29 to US$99 a month, and the smallest includes 1 project, 150 reports a day and 125 tracked keywords per project. Monthly subscribers get a one-time seven-day trial.
Moz Pro Standard costs $99 a month, or $79 a month paid yearly, with 1 user, 3 tracked sites, 300 tracked keywords and 400,000 pages crawled a month. A no-cost Moz Community account gives limited access to Keyword Explorer, Link Explorer and MozBar, enough to try the data before paying.
Semrush competitors for traffic and domain research
For a competitor's traffic, Similarweb is the specialist. Its Competitive Intelligence plan costs $199 a month, or $125 a month billed annually, as of October 2026, for 1 user and 3 months of history. Similarweb says it covers website performance, traffic and engagement, demographics and competitor alerts. The package that adds a rank tracker, backlinks and site audit costs $399 a month.
For a competitor's keywords, SE Ranking is the cheaper all-round swap. Its Core plan costs $129 a month, or $103.20 a month billed annually, and SE Ranking lists unlimited keyword, competitor and backlink research in it, with 10 projects and 2,000 keywords tracked daily. That is four times the tracked keywords of Semrush's SEO plan for $10 less a month. Against Semrush Starter, which carries the fuller research tools, the gap is $70 a month.
If you review competitors once a quarter rather than every week, you may not need a suite at all. Our SEO competitor analysis template lists the columns to fill for each rival and where each number comes from.
Backlink research without Semrush
For backlinks, compare Ahrefs first. Ahrefs Lite costs $129 a month as of October 2026 with 750 tracked keywords updated weekly, 100,000 crawl credits a month, 1 user and 6 months of history. Website owners can also sign up for Ahrefs' no-cost plan, which gives limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit.
We compare the backlink options in more depth in Ahrefs alternatives for backlinks and keyword research.
Site audits and rank tracking without Semrush
For audits and daily rank tracking, SE Ranking Core gives the most tracked keywords per dollar of the plans we checked. It tracks 2,000 keywords daily and audits 250,000 pages a month for $129. Moz Pro Standard is cheaper at $99 and crawls 400,000 pages a month, but tracks 300 keywords. Ahrefs Lite tracks 750 keywords with weekly updates.
If you only need to know where your own site ranks, Search Console's Performance report shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position by query, page, country, device and search appearance, for the past three months by default. It costs nothing, and it covers only sites you have verified, so it tells you nothing about a competitor.
Competitor ads without Semrush
To see a competitor's Google ads, use Google's Ads Transparency Center. Google launched it in March 2023 as a searchable hub of ads served from verified advertisers. It shows the ads an advertiser has run, the regions they ran in, the last date each was shown and the format. It does not show which keywords an advertiser bids on.
That gap is where Semrush's Advertising toolkit earns its price. The base tier, at $99 a month billed annually, includes competitor keyword analysis and ad copy research, and the Pro tier at $220 a month billed annually adds all competitor ads. For Facebook and Instagram, Meta runs its own library, and our Meta Ad Library guide shows how to search it.
When Semrush is still the right choice
Semrush is still the right choice when your team uses most of it every day. One login for keyword research, Position Tracking, Site Audit, backlink analysis and AI visibility saves more hours than a cheaper bill saves dollars, and a new rank tracker usually starts your history from zero.
Stay too if you need the keywords competitors bid on next to your organic data, since that comes from the Advertising toolkit and Google's transparency tools leave it out.
Leave if you open Semrush a few times a month to look up a competitor. At that volume, paying per report usually costs less than any subscription.
Run competitor research one report at a time
Our tools sell competitor and keyword data by the run. A monthly plan buys credits and each report spends them. The Indie plan is $29 a month for 2,000 credits.
Domain Overview costs 50 credits, so the Indie plan covers 40 a month. It shows how many Google keywords a site ranks for by position, its estimated monthly visits and what they would cost as ads, how many keywords it pays for and its estimated ad spend, and its link totals, in one of 20 countries. Competitor Keywords costs 35 credits and lists a rival's top 100 Google keywords by estimated traffic. Keyword Gap costs 85 credits and finds keywords a competitor ranks for in the top 20 where your site does not rank at all. Backlink Finder costs 70 credits and lists the 100 strongest sites linking to a domain. Keyword Research costs 34 credits, and Competitor Google Ads costs 15 credits and pulls up to 100 recent ads from the Ads Transparency Center.
The numbers come from a third-party search and link data provider, so treat them as estimates for comparing sites, not exact counts. A run is refunded when the provider has no record of the domain. We do not track rankings or keep our own link index, so if daily tracking is your job, pick one of the suites above.
