AnswerThePublic alternatives for finding questions
·7 min read
AnswerThePublic turns one seed keyword into a map of the questions, comparisons and related searches people type into search engines, and its plans cost $20 to $199 a month as of October 2026. The right AnswerThePublic alternative depends on which questions you need. Use AlsoAsked for People Also Ask trees, a volume tool to rank questions by demand, Reddit and forums for the questions people ask each other, and your own Search Console data, which costs nothing, for the questions your site already shows up for.
What AnswerThePublic does well and what it costs
AnswerThePublic is good at breadth from a single seed. The tool, which you will also see written as Answer the Public, takes one keyword and draws a map of the questions, prepositions, comparisons and related searches around it. You can hide branches you don't need, export the map as a high-res image for a client deck, or export the results to an XLSX spreadsheet.
Two features matter for ongoing work. Search listening alerts send a weekly email digest of new questions people ask around a topic, and the Growth and Business plans let you compare data over time. Every plan includes CPC and search volume data.
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly | Users | Searches a month | Listening alerts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $20 | $160 | 1 | 100 | 1 |
| Growth | $99 | $792 | Up to 3 | 200 | 5 |
| Business | $199 | $1,592 | Up to 10 | 300 | 20 |
These are US prices from AnswerThePublic's pricing page as of October 2026, and the page says prices differ by region. Without a plan, you get a small daily search limit.
Why people look for an AnswerThePublic alternative
You need an AnswerThePublic alternative when the search cap or the bundle doesn't match the job. Starter's 100 searches a month suit a blogger planning a few posts. An agency researching a client's whole catalogue will hit that cap fast, and the next plan up is $99 a month as of October 2026. Every plan also bundles prompt suggestions and AI articles, 2,000 prompt suggestions and up to 35 articles a month on Growth, which you pay for even if you only want the question data.
The other reason is the kind of question. A People Also Ask tree shows which questions Google groups together for a search. Forum threads show the long, specific questions people ask each other. Search Console shows the questions your site already earns impressions for. Pick the source by the job.

Get autocomplete questions straight from Google
The no-cost way to build an autocomplete question list is to type the questions into Google yourself. Google says its predictions reflect real searches and also weigh the language and location of the query, trending interest and your own past searches. So what you see is close to what your market types today, with some of your history mixed in.
- Open a private window and stay signed out, so your own past searches carry less weight.
- Type a question word and the start of your topic, such as
how to descale, and let Google finish it. - Repeat with why, what, can, is, which, best and vs.
- Copy each suggestion into a sheet and group them by intent.
It is slow, but it is a question keyword tool with no middleman.
People Also Ask tools for question trees
AlsoAsked is the People Also Ask tool to use when you want the questions Google groups with a search, rather than the ones people start typing. It pulls live People Also Ask data, draws it as a visual graph and targets by country, city and language. AlsoAsked says its Deep Search returns about 150 questions per query on average.
The no-cost version is Google's results page. Search the question, open a few People Also Ask entries and note what appears.
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly | Credits a month | Search history |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $15 a month | $144 a year | 100 | 24 hours |
| Lite | $29 a month | $276 a year | 300 | 1 month |
| Pro | $59 a month | $564 a year | 1,000 | 1 year |
Prices are as of October 2026, plus tax, from AlsoAsked's pricing page. Every plan includes unlimited users, all regions and languages, Deep Search, CSV export, bulk searches, API access and an MCP server, so the plans differ only in credits and in how long your search history is kept. Visitors who haven't registered also get some monthly searches at no cost.
For a team, the unlimited users line is the one to notice. AnswerThePublic caps users at 1, 3 and 10 by plan.
Question keywords with search volume
To rank questions by demand you need a monthly search figure next to each one, and AnswerThePublic already includes volume on every plan, so this alone isn't a reason to switch. If you are weighing the big paid suites instead, our guides to Semrush alternatives and Ahrefs alternatives cover their prices and limits.
If you already have a list from Google, AlsoAsked or a forum, paste up to 100 questions into Keyword Metrics for monthly Google searches, difficulty, CPC and the yearly trend, at 33 credits a run. It strips the question marks for you. Expect some long questions to come back with no data, because Google has no monthly search figure for phrases that are rarely searched.
Questions that AI Overviews answer
Questions answered inside AI Overviews and ChatGPT are a different list again. AI Question Finder returns the 25 most searched questions that Google AI Overviews or ChatGPT answer about a topic, one platform per run, with monthly searches, the start of each answer and the first five sources it lists. A run costs 160 credits.
Questions people ask on Reddit and forums
Forums give you the questions people ask each other, in their own words. Someone on Reddit rarely posts "standing desk height". They describe a sore lower back after a month at a desk they set too high, then ask what they got wrong. That phrasing often makes a better heading than anything in a keyword list, because it is how your customer describes the problem.
Search Google for site:reddit.com followed by your topic, then do the same for Quora and the forums in your niche. Copy the thread titles that are phrased as questions, and read the top replies for the follow-ups.
Search Console queries phrased as questions
Search Console is the most useful no-cost question source for any site with traffic, because every query in it is one your pages already appeared for. A regex filter pulls out the questions.
- Open Performance, then Search results.
- Click + Add filter, choose Queries, then Custom (regex).
- Paste the expression below, keep Matches regex and click Apply.
- Set the date range to the last 3 months and sort the table by impressions.
^(who|what|when|where|why|how|which|is|are|can|does|do|should|will)\bGoogle uses RE2 syntax for these filters, and matching is not case-sensitive by default. Look for questions with plenty of impressions and an average position past 10. Google already connects your site with them. Open the page that ranks and check whether any section answers the question in its first sentence, and if none does, write one.
One gap remains. The Generative AI performance report, open to all sites since August 31, 2026, shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode combined, by page, country, device and date. It doesn't list queries, so it can't tell you which questions trigger an AI answer.
When AnswerThePublic is still the right pick
Keep AnswerThePublic if you want one tool that keeps watching a topic for you. The listening alerts email you new questions every week, and the image export goes straight into a client deck. Volume and CPC come on every plan, and Growth adds comparisons over time.
If you research a handful of topics a month, Starter's 100 searches for $20 a month as of October 2026 is a fair price for that.
Find the questions your page leaves unanswered
Question Finder runs up to 10 Google autocomplete lookups for your topic, one for each question pattern such as "how to", "why", "is" and "vs", in the market you choose. It keeps the top five suggestions from each, drops the ones that wander off topic and groups the rest by intent, such as definitions, how-tos, costs and comparisons.
Add a page URL and it reads the page's HTML and marks each question as answered, covered by a heading that doesn't lead with an answer, mentioned in passing, or missing. Matching is by shared words, not meaning, and it doesn't include People Also Ask, search volume or text that only JavaScript renders. A run costs 15 credits.
