AI Overview tracker: how to track AI Overviews for your keywords
·7 min read
An AI Overview tracker records, for each keyword you care about, whether Google showed an AI Overview, whether it cited your site and which sites it cited instead. Search Console covers only part of that. Its Generative AI performance report counts impressions by page with no queries, and it puts AI Overviews and AI Mode in one total. For keyword-level data you either check a list by hand each month or pay for a rank tracker that records AI Overview presence and citations, and both give you a sample, not the answer every searcher saw.
This post is about measuring. If you want to earn the citation first, start with how to show up in Google AI Overviews.
AI Overview tracker options compared
The right method depends on how many keywords you watch and whether you need to see competitors.
| Method | Which keywords showed an overview | Whether you were cited | Who else was cited | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Search Console Generative AI report | No, pages only | Impressions by page, no queries | No | None |
| Search Console Performance report | Queries, mixed with blue links | Not separable | No | None |
| Manual checks of a keyword list | Yes | Yes | Yes | Your time |
| Rank tracker with AI Overview data | Yes, for tracked keywords | Usually, confirm in a trial | Depends on the tool | Subscription |
| AI citation dataset | Counts for the most asked questions | Yes | Yes | Per lookup |
Most sites need two of these, Search Console for the trend and manual checks or a tracker for keyword detail.
Can Search Console track AI Overviews?
Partly. It shows how often your pages appeared in Google's AI features, but not for which searches or in which feature.
The Generative AI performance report, announced June 3, 2026 and opened to every site on August 31, 2026, counts impressions of links to your site in AI Overviews and AI Mode. You can split them by page, country, device and date, and filter text searches from multimodal ones. There are no clicks, no queries, and no way to separate AI Overviews from AI Mode. It answers one question well. Which of your pages appear in Google's AI answers at all, and is that number rising? Export the pages table every month so you keep a history.
The regular Performance report has queries and clicks, but it folds AI Overview links into the Web search type. Under Google's counting rules, an overview takes one position on the results page, every link inside it gets that position, and a click on any of those links counts as a click. A site cited in an overview at the top of the page can therefore report position 1 for a query where its blue link sits on page two. You cannot filter those rows out, so the report hints at citations without listing them.
How to track AI Overviews by hand
Tracking AI Overviews by hand gives you the query-level record Search Console leaves out. At a minute or two per keyword, 40 keywords take about an hour a month.
- Pick 20 to 50 queries that bring buyers. Start with Search Console queries that already earn impressions, then add the questions people ask before they buy. AI Question Finder lists the most searched questions AI Overviews answer on a topic, with the sources each answer lists.
- Open a private browser window and stay signed out of Google, so your own search history does not shape the results.
- Search from the country and device your customers use. If you sell abroad, use a VPN exit in that country and write it in the sheet.
- Search each query and expand the overview if Google cuts it short. Record whether an overview appeared, whether it linked your site, which URL, and the other sites it cited.
- Screenshot every overview. The wording and links change between checks, and the screenshot is your only record of what it said.
- Repeat on the same weekday each month with the same setup. When a citation disappears, check again the next day before you rewrite the page.
A sheet with these columns is enough:
| Date | Keyword | Setup | Overview | Cited | Our URL | Others cited |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-05 | standing desk for small rooms | US, desktop | Yes | Yes | /guides/small-desks | Competitor A, a Reddit thread |
| 2026-10-05 | standing desk converter vs desk | US, desktop | Yes | No | Competitor B, a review site | |
| 2026-10-05 | standing desk height chart | US, desktop | No |
From the sheet, watch one number, your citation rate. That is the keywords where the overview cited you divided by the keywords that showed an overview. Going from 7 of 24 to 10 of 25 over a month is a change worth reporting. One keyword flipping is noise.
AI Overviews rank tracking tools
A rank tracker with AI Overview data checks your keyword list on a schedule, the only practical option past a few hundred keywords. Three well-known trackers document it on their own pages.
Semrush Position Tracking can filter your campaign keywords to those that triggered an AI Overview and show where your domain appears as a source, per its AI Overview help page. With AI Overview rankings switched on, it records a citation as a #1 ranking whatever your organic position, so your average position improves the day you get cited. Read organic and AI Overview results separately or the chart will flatter you.
Ahrefs lists AI Overviews among the 19 SERP features its Rank Tracker monitors, with weekly updates by default. The product page does not say whether it stores which URLs each overview cited, so check that in a trial.
SE Ranking's AI Overviews Tracker shows the keywords you rank for that have an overview, where your site ranks inside it, and the domains and URLs cited as sources. Its page lists plans from $103.20 a month as of October 2026.
Before you pay for any of them, ask the vendor:
- Does it store every cited URL for each keyword, or only a yes or no for your domain?
- How often does it check, and does each check count against your keyword quota?
- Does it report AI Mode separately or mix it in?
- Can you export the raw rows, so you can compute your own citation rate?
Why every AI Overview tracker is a sample
No tracker sees the overview your customer saw. Each check runs the query once, from one location and device at one moment, and records that answer.
Google shows an overview only when its systems judge it "additive to classic Search", per its guide to AI features, and it builds the answer from several related searches across subtopics. Either step can come out differently on the next run. Location, device, language and search history add more variation. Google's AI optimization guide also states that no third-party tool has access to its ranking or AI systems. Every vendor reads the public results from the outside, as you do in a private window.
That changes how you read the data:
- Judge trends across the whole list. A single keyword proves nothing.
- Recheck a lost citation on another day before you act on it.
- Keep the setup fixed. Switching device or location between months breaks the comparison.
If no overview appears for your queries at all, read why a Google AI Overview is not showing up before you buy a tracker.
Which tracking method fits your site
Small site. Use the Generative AI report monthly and a hand-checked list of 20 to 40 queries. A tracker subscription costs more than the decisions it would change at this size.
Agency. Use a rank tracker with citation data for each client. Ten clients at 40 keywords each is 400 manual searches a month, and nobody does those the same way every time. Pair it with each client's Generative AI report export, because the tracker only sees the keywords you gave it.
Enterprise. Run thousands of keywords across markets through a tracker's API into your own reporting, and join it to the Generative AI report by page. Keep a hand-checked panel of your 20 most valuable queries anyway. A person reading the overview catches an outdated price or a wrong claim about your brand, and a citation flag never will.
Track AI Overview citations for a topic or competitor
Our AI Citation Finder works from the other direction to a rank tracker. Instead of checking your keyword list, it reads which pages AI answers cite across a whole topic. Enter a topic and it lists the 25 pages cited in the most AI answers, with how many answers cite each and the monthly searches behind them, plus the sites cited most and each one's share of the answers. Enter a website, yours or a competitor's, and it shows how many AI answers cite it, which of its pages are among the 25 most cited and which pages appear next to them. You can count Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT or both, in any of 20 countries or all of them together.
It is not a daily tracker. The counts come from a data provider that tracks the questions people ask most, with far fewer ChatGPT answers than Google ones, and AI Mode is not covered. Your edits show up only after the provider records new answers, so run it monthly next to your keyword sheet. Each run costs 160 credits. A lookup the provider has no record of is refunded. One that finds the topic or site but no cited pages is charged, and the report says nothing was found.
