GEO tools compared: what each type can and can't tell you

·4 min read

GEO tools measure or improve how often AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews name and cite your site. They come in four types. Prompt trackers sample AI answers, citation finders show which pages get quoted, readiness checks test whether AI crawlers can read you, and content optimizers rewrite pages. Pick by the question you need answered, because no single type answers all four.

Vendors below are described only from their own homepages, checked in October 2026. Features in this category change monthly, so confirm before you buy.

The four types of generative engine optimization tools

Type Answers Can't tell you
Prompt tracking Does ChatGPT name us for this question? How many real people asked it
Citation analysis Which pages do AI answers quote? Answers for questions nobody tracks
On-site readiness Can AI crawlers fetch and read our pages? Whether any engine will cite them
Content optimization What should this page say? Whether the rewrite gets cited

Most platforms sell two or three of these in one subscription. Judge each part on its own.

Prompt tracking and citation analysis

These two types read AI answers, so they share one weakness. Answers vary between runs, and your prompt list is a guess at what customers ask.

Prompt tracking

A prompt tracker sends a fixed list of questions to AI engines on a schedule and records whether your brand appears, where it ranks among the brands named, and which sites the answer cites. It is the closest thing GEO has to rank tracking.

Peec AI says it tracks visibility, position and sentiment across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini (peec.ai). OtterlyAI lists ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude (otterly.ai). Profound lists ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek and Google AI Overviews (tryprofound.com). Clearscope offers Query Tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude (clearscope.io).

One check is an anecdote. A trend needs many runs, and it reports on your list, not on real demand. LLM visibility tools goes deeper on that tradeoff.

Citation source analysis

Citation analysis shows which domains and URLs AI answers cite for a topic, so you see who the engines trust and where to get mentioned. Peec AI has a "Find Key Sources" view. Profound lists Citation Analytics, sources cited across answers.

It can't tell you why a page was chosen, or how much traffic a citation sends. For Google, the Search Console Generative AI performance report, open to all sites since August 31, 2026, shows impressions only.

On-site readiness and content optimization tools

These two types work on your site, not on answers.

On-site AI readiness checks

Readiness checks test whether robots.txt allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, whether content survives without JavaScript, and whether brand identity and structured data are consistent. Scrunch lists Site Optimization and Agent Traffic analysis (scrunch.com). OtterlyAI mentions crawlability checks in its content audit.

This is the cheapest type and catches outright blockers, like a CDN rule returning 403 to AI bots. It can't predict citations. Google's AI optimization guide says no third-party tool has access to its ranking or AI systems, so treat any "AI readiness score" as a checklist, not a forecast.

Content optimization

Content optimizers suggest or write changes so a page answers questions directly and gets quoted. Frase lists GEO Optimization and an AI Visibility monitor, plus an MCP server for running it from Claude or Cursor (frase.io). Profound describes an AI Marketer that rewrites pages with citation decay and stages them in your CMS.

They save writing time. None can prove a rewrite caused a citation, so pair one with tracking. For snippet and answer formatting, see AEO tools.

How to choose GEO tools

Start with the question, then the type.

  1. Can AI crawlers read us at all? Run a readiness check first. A blocked site makes every other number zero.
  2. Do engines name us for buyer questions? Sample a handful of prompts before paying for daily tracking.
  3. Who do they cite instead? Use citation analysis to find sites to pitch and page types to write.
  4. Then optimize content and rerun the same prompts.

Ask each vendor which engines it queries, whether it uses the consumer apps or the APIs, how many runs make up one number, and whether you can export raw answers. For a one-off review, follow our GEO audit guide.

Run GEO checks on your own site

Our GEO tools each run one job, paid per run in credits. Three map to the types above.

AI Answer Visibility asks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini one question with web search on and reports whether each answer names your brand, where it ranks, whether it cites your site, and which brands it names instead. It costs 120 credits, does not track answers over time, and skips Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. AI Citation Finder shows the 25 pages cited in the most Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT answers for a topic, or how often a website gets cited, for 160 credits. It sees only the questions its data tracks, and no Perplexity or Gemini. AI Crawler View compares raw HTML with the rendered page to show what GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot miss without JavaScript, for 8 credits.
