Which sources does ChatGPT cite?
·4 min read
ChatGPT sources are whatever pages its web search finds for the question in front of it, so there is no fixed list of sites it always cites. The sources change with the topic and the kind of question, so the only list worth having is the one for your customers' questions. You can see the sources behind any answer in the Sources panel and build that list by hand or with a citation lookup.
Is there a list of ChatGPT sources?
No, and anyone who sells you one is selling an average of someone else's prompts. ChatGPT cites pages only when it searches the web, and each search starts from queries it writes for that one prompt. A prompt about payroll software and one about sourdough starters pull from different parts of the web, so averaging them hides whether a review site, a forum or a vendor page wins in your category.
OpenAI documents two limits. An answer written without a search carries no citations, and a site that blocks OAI-SearchBot is not shown as a source in search answers. How ChatGPT picks among the results is unpublished. The mechanics of the search itself are in how ChatGPT search works.
How to see ChatGPT's sources for an answer
Turn search on, ask the question, then open the list of sources under the answer.
- Start a new chat and turn on search, so the answer is sure to use the web.
- Ask the question the way a customer would.
- Read the inline citations. Each links to the page behind that sentence.
- Open the sources list below the answer to see every page it drew on.
- Note every cited domain, not only the first.
OpenAI describes these controls in its help article on searching the web with ChatGPT, and warns that citations can be incomplete or wrong. Open the pages and check that they say what the answer claims.
Which kinds of pages ChatGPT cites for each type of question
The kind of question decides the kind of page, because ChatGPT can cite only what comes back for the short searches it writes. The table is a working model, not measured data, so check it against your topic.
| Question type | Example prompt | Pages that tend to come back |
|---|---|---|
| Recommendation | best invoicing app for freelancers | Comparison articles, review sites, forum threads |
| Price or spec | how much does Acme Time cost | The vendor's pricing page, then resellers and reviews |
| How to | how to export contacts from Acme CRM | The vendor's help docs, then tutorials |
| Definition | what is a W-9 form | Official and reference pages, or no search at all |
| News | latest on the EU AI Act | News sites |
| Shopping | waterproof hiking boots under $150 | Product cards built from merchant data, plus review pages |
Vendor pages win when the question names the vendor, because they state the fact most directly. Third-party pages win when the question is open, because "best X for Y" searches return lists written by someone else. So for the prompts that bring new customers, the sources are mostly pages you do not own.
Why some pages get cited and others do not
A page gets cited when it comes back for one of ChatGPT's searches, OAI-SearchBot can read it, and it has a sentence specific enough to support a claim. Most vendor pages fail on the last one. "Flexible plans for growing teams" supports nothing. "The Team plan costs $12 per user per month" answers a price question. The full fix list is in how to get cited by ChatGPT. This post covers the step before it, finding out who you compete with.
How to check ChatGPT sources for your own topic
Sample your own prompts and count the domains. It takes an afternoon and beats any industry-wide list.
- Write 15 to 25 prompts your customers would type. Questions people ask ChatGPT about your industry covers where to find them.
- Run each one with search on, in a logged-out or temporary chat, so your memory and history do not steer it.
- Log every cited domain in a spreadsheet, one row per prompt.
- Run the set again a week later, because ChatGPT gives different answers to the same prompt.
- Sort by how many prompts cite each domain.
The top of that sheet is your target list. A comparison site cited in half your recommendation prompts is worth more than another post on your own blog. If your pricing page never appears for price questions, fix that page first. The weak spot is scale, since twenty prompts is a small sample and you never see how many people ask each one.
Find the sources ChatGPT cites for your topic
AI Citation Finder looks up which pages ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews cite. Enter a topic and it returns the 25 pages cited in the most AI answers, with the number of answers citing each page and the monthly searches behind those answers, plus the sites cited most and the share of the topic's answers each one appears in. Enter a domain, yours or a competitor's, and it reports how many answers cite that site and which of its pages are among the 25 most cited. You can count ChatGPT, AI Overviews or both, in any of 20 countries or all of them together.
Our citation data covers the questions people ask most, and far fewer ChatGPT answers than AI Overviews, so read the counts as a comparison between sites rather than a census. The tool does not read what the answers say and does not track Perplexity or Gemini. A run costs 160 credits.
