How to see your competitors' Google Ads

·4 min read

There are three ways to see your competitors' Google Ads. Search for the keywords you both care about and read the ads that appear, look the competitor up in Google's Ads Transparency Center to see every ad it has run, and open Auction Insights in your own Google Ads account to see who competes with you on the keywords you bid on. Each one answers a different question, so most people end up using all three.

None of them shows a competitor's keywords, budget or click-through rate. Google keeps those private.

How to see competitors' Google ads by searching

Searching the way a customer would shows the ads in context, next to the organic results and the other bidders, assets and all.

Do it with some discipline:

  1. Use a private window and set your location to the market you sell in, because ads are targeted by place.
  2. Search the 10 to 20 queries that bring you customers, including "best", "pricing" and "alternative to" phrasings.
  3. Screenshot each results page and note who appears and in which slot.
  4. Repeat on a phone, since the layout and the ads can differ.

Do not click the ads. Every click costs the competitor money, and deliberate clicks are what Google's invalid clicks policy exists to catch. Google says it filters invalid clicks and does not charge for them, so clicking repeatedly gains you nothing. If you want the landing page, copy the display URL and visit it directly.

If you advertise too, searching for your own keywords over and over has a cost of its own. Google's help on the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool says it shows your ad in live results without adding impressions to your stats, which a manual search can do. It sits under Tools, then Troubleshooting, in your Google Ads account. Use it when you check your own ad's position against the field.

Look them up in the Ads Transparency Center

The Ads Transparency Center lists the ads verified advertisers run on Google. Search by advertiser name or website, filter by country and format, and open any ad to see when it ran.

It is the best route for history. Searching shows you today. The Transparency Center shows you which ads a competitor has kept running for months, which is the closest public signal you get to "this one works". Our guide to using the Google Ads Transparency Center walks through the filters and their gaps.

Use Auction Insights for keywords you bid on

Auction Insights shows which advertisers enter the same auctions as you, on your own Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns. Google's Auction Insights help page lists six Search statistics, including impression share, overlap rate and outranking share.

Open Campaigns, Ad groups or Search keywords, tick the rows you want and click Auction insights. Two limits matter. You only see auctions you are in, and Google hides insights when your impression share is under 10%.

It answers a question the other two routes cannot. It tells you which competitor outbids you most often, and on which keywords. For a fuller process across bids, copy and pages, see our PPC competitor analysis guide.

What to note in each competitor ad

Write down the same fields for every ad, so the comparison is a table and not an impression.

What to note What it tells you
The offer Discount, trial length, guarantee, shipping terms. This is what you are priced against.
The headline promise The benefit they lead with, such as speed, price or a niche. Repeated across ads, it is their positioning.
The landing page Home page, product page or a dedicated landing page. Note the form, the price shown and how many steps to buy.
Assets Sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, prices, phone numbers. Google now calls extensions assets. Sitelinks show which pages they push.
How long it has run Ads that survive for months usually pay back. Ads that vanish in weeks probably did not.
Brand bidding Whether they bid on your brand name. Search it and see.

Landing pages deserve the most time. If a competitor keeps sending paid traffic to a page you have no match for, that is a gap to fill.

Do not copy wording. Use their promises to find what the market responds to, then say something more specific. Their organic side is worth a look too, since the topics they rank for often mirror what they advertise on. Our competitor keywords tool shows the searches a site ranks for in Google.

See a competitor's Google ads in one report

Our Competitor Google Ads tool takes a competitor's website and an optional country. It lists up to 100 of the most recently shown Google ads that send people to that domain, from Google's Ads Transparency Center data, with each ad's format, advertiser account, first and last shown dates and days running. It counts how many are running now and how many started in the last 30 days, and lists every advertiser account behind the ads, which is how you spot agencies and resellers.

For up to 10 text ads, those running now first and then the longest-running, it reads the headlines, descriptions and landing pages. It does not show sitelinks or other assets, the keywords a competitor bids on, its spend or how its ads perform. A run costs 15 credits. A run that finds no ads is refunded.
