Keyword gap analysis, from missing list to brief

Split the comparison into missing and weak keywords, score what is left, and write one brief per rival page.

A keyword gap analysis takes the searches a rival site ranks for in Google, removes the ones your site already ranks for, and hands you what is left. Done well, that leftover list becomes a set of content briefs. Done badly, it becomes a spreadsheet of a few hundred terms that nobody acts on. This guide walks from the raw comparison to a short list of pages worth writing, and shows where seogeoaeo.ai's Keyword Gap tool does the pulling for you.

Four lists hide inside every comparison

When you line up two sites' rankings, each keyword lands in one of four places.

Set Rival ranks You rank What to do with it
Missing Yes No Brief a new page
Weak Yes, higher Yes, lower Improve the page you have
Shared Yes Yes, level or higher Leave it, you hold this ground
Unique No Yes Protect it

Only the first two are work. They need different people: a missing keyword goes to a writer, a weak one goes to an editor who reworks an existing page. Keep them in separate lists so a writer does not start a fresh page on a topic you already cover.

The shared set tells you something too. If you share almost nothing with a site, it is not your search rival, even if your sales team loses deals to it. Its gap list will be full of topics your buyers never type.

Pulling the missing set

  1. Choose the rival from search results, not from the sales pipeline. The right site is the one that keeps outranking you for the searches that bring buyers. If you are unsure, seogeoaeo.ai's Competitor Finder (38 credits) lists the 30 sites that share the most Google keywords with yours.
  2. Pick the country where you sell. Rankings in another market are noise for your plan.
  3. Keep only keywords where the rival sits in the top 20. Lower than that, the page gets so few visits that the keyword proves little.
  4. Set brand searches aside. You will not take a rival's login or pricing searches from them.
  5. Group by the rival URL that ranks. A dozen keywords landing on one of their pages describe one brief.

seogeoaeo.ai's Keyword Gap does steps 2 to 5 in one run. You give it your site, one competitor and one of 20 markets. It asks for the 300 most searched keywords the competitor ranks for and you do not, drops any where the competitor is below position 20, and returns each keyword with search volume, difficulty, intent and cost per click. The report flags easy keywords, splits out blog topics and terms worth bidding on, leaves the rival's own name out of the blog topics, and lists the competitor pages that win the most gap keywords. A run costs 85 credits, shown before it starts.

The weak set comes from your own data

The Keyword Gap tool covers the missing set only. For keywords where you rank but trail, start with the Performance report in Google Search Console. It shows the queries, clicks, impressions and average position for your own verified site, and those positions are measured rather than estimated. Look for queries where you sit on page two and check which rival page sits above you.

Score before you write

Run each missing keyword through three questions in this order.

  • Does the intent match what you sell? Look at the results page. If it is full of recipes and you sell kitchen scales, the volume does not matter.
  • Can you rank for it? Difficulty is a rough estimate of how strong the ranking pages are. Newer sites should start at the low end.
  • Do you already have a page on it? If yes, the keyword belongs in the weak list. A new page would compete with your old one.

What survives all three goes on the list, sorted by monthly searches.

From list to brief

Open the rival page that collects the most gap keywords and read it yourself. Then write down the main keyword and the three to ten related gap terms on the same page, the format the results favor (guide, calculator, template, comparison), what their page covers, what yours will add, and which of your pages will link to it. The "what yours will add" line is the one that matters. Without it you are writing a copy of their page.

Limits worth knowing

Search volumes and difficulty are estimates. The tool compares one competitor per run, cannot read your Search Console, and does not show keywords a rival bids on in Google Ads. If the data provider has no record of the pair, the run is refunded; if it compares both sites and finds no gap, the run is still charged.

If you want five domains in one view, or the weak set computed for you, an all-in-one suite such as Semrush does that, at a monthly subscription. For a one-rival check a few times a year, credits on a seogeoaeo.ai plan go further: the $29 Indie plan's 2,000 credits cover 23 gap runs.
