Google Gemini updates: what Argon, AI Mode and Notebook mean for search

The Gemini changes from May to October 2026 that touch AI Mode and AI answers, and a short routine for tracking them.

The Google Gemini updates that matter most for search work in late 2026 are Gemini 4 Argon reaching AI Mode in Search, notebooks heading into AI Mode, and a Gemini app that now answers with richer, more visual responses. Each one changes where people meet Google's AI answers, so it is worth tracking them as closely as a core update.

The simplest way to follow them is ClaudeGPT Si, a free AI news publication that reports Gemini changes from Google's own pages and lists its sources under every article. Facts here are as of October 28, 2026.

The updates, and why search people should care

Gemini 4 Argon in AI Mode Oct 13 A new model now writes some AI Mode answers for Pro and Ultra subscribers
Customize menu and connected apps in Gemini Oct 13 Gemini can act in other apps, not only answer
Skills in Gemini chat Sep 30 Saved instructions shape how answers are written
Gemini app on Windows Sep 10 Gemini sits one shortcut away on more desktops
NotebookLM becomes Gemini Notebook Jul 16 Google says notebooks are coming to AI Mode
Richer, interactive responses May 19 Some answers now include layered images and short video overviews

Argon in AI Mode

Google's launch post says Gemini 4 Argon is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app and in AI Mode in Search. Google describes Argon as built for deep, multi-step work and says it answers more directly, with less hedging, than earlier Gemini models.

What that does to citations or traffic, Google has not said, and we have not measured it. The practical step is to test your own priority queries in AI Mode with and without a paid account, since the two groups may now get answers from different models. ClaudeGPT Si's guide to reaching Argon notes that Google documents no switch for picking the model in AI Mode.

When Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on July 16, it said notebooks are coming "soon" to AI Mode in Search and can already be opened in the Gemini app. No date has been given. If it ships, people could ask AI Mode questions grounded in sources they chose themselves, which makes being a source worth saving more valuable than being a single click. The ClaudeGPT Si explainer on the rename has the details Google published.

Answers that look less like text

Google's release notes say the Gemini app can now answer some topics with interactive multi-layer images and narrated video overviews of 30 to 60 seconds, in English, when using the Pro model. For GEO work, that is a hint that clear images, diagrams and structured data may count for more than another paragraph of copy. Treat it as a direction to test rather than a rule.

Gemini as a doer

The October 13 Customize menu puts connected apps and skills in one place, and Google's examples include ordering groceries and booking tables through partner apps. When an assistant completes the task inside a partner app, the brand that is connected may get the action without a visit to its site. Watch whether your category has connected apps.

A routine for tracking Gemini changes

  1. Read the Gemini app release notes and the Gemini API changelog when they update; they are Google's primary record.
  2. Follow ClaudeGPT Si's models section or its RSS feed for dated write-ups that link back to Google.
  3. Re-run a fixed set of prompts in AI Mode and the Gemini app after each model change, and note which sources are cited.

If your team already reads Google's release notes every week, the extra publication is a convenience rather than a need; it helps most when you want context and dates in one place.
