Claude Code vs Codex cost: where the money actually goes

Subscriptions, credits and stray API keys decide the bill more than list prices do, and neither tool reports the other.

The real Claude Code vs Codex cost question is not which list price is lower but which billing path your work runs on. Both tools can run on a monthly subscription or on a pay-as-you-go API key, both sell extra capacity once a limit is reached, and neither shows the other's spend; UsageAtlas, a free desktop tracker, is the easiest way to see both in one estimated total.

That matters for anyone who checks numbers for a living. If you run audits, keyword research or content work with two coding agents in the background, you want to know which one is eating the budget before the invoice arrives.

Three ways each tool can charge you

Claude Code and Codex follow the same broad pattern.

Billing path Claude Code Codex
Subscription Anthropic plans such as Pro and Max, with five-hour and weekly limits ChatGPT plans from Free up to Pro, Business and Enterprise
Extra capacity Usage credits past the plan limit Credits for Plus and Pro, workspace credits for teams
API key Set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and pay API rates Sign in with an API key and pay API pricing

We skip dollar figures here because both vendors revise their plans. Check claude.com/pricing and the Codex pricing page for current ones.

Where the money hides

Subscription plus credits. On a plan, the monthly fee is fixed until you buy more. The variable part is usage credits on Claude or ChatGPT credits on Codex. Both are opt-in, so the risk is turning them on and forgetting.

A stray API key. Anthropic's docs warn that a set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY makes Claude Code use the key, billed at API rates, instead of your subscription. OpenAI lets any Codex user run extra local chats with an API key at API rates. Either way, you can end up paying twice without noticing.

Mixed days. When the morning runs on Claude Code and the afternoon on Codex, each tool's own figures look modest. The total is what lands on your card.

What the built-in numbers tell you

Claude Code's /usage shows a session cost, but Anthropic says it is computed locally at list price and is an estimate; for Pro and Max subscribers it is not relevant for billing. Codex's /status shows rate limits, and /usage opens the usage and billing settings when you sign in with ChatGPT. Neither command covers the other tool.

A combined estimate in one place

UsageAtlas reads Claude Code and Codex on your computer and adds them into one running total of tokens, requests and estimated cost. Filter to one tool to see its share, or look at history to find the days that ran hot, the models behind them and the hours you worked. It also shows each tool's usage windows, which tells you when you are close to needing credits.

It is free and open source, runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and needs no account for local tracking. The cost column is an estimate, not a bill. For the actual charge, use the Claude Console or claude.ai settings, and your ChatGPT or OpenAI billing pages.

Which costs less?

That depends on your plan, your models and how much you run. A light user on one plan may never see a difference. A heavy user on both plans plus credits will. The only way to know for your own work is to measure it for a few weeks, and a combined tracker is the low-effort way to do that.

If you bill a single API key per tool and already read the provider consoles each week, those consoles may be all you need.
